the duke of guise, a french nobleman related to mary, wanted to make england catholic again and increase his familys power. philip II supported the plot by providing money to pay for soldiers. the pope approved. francis throckmorton passed letters between the plotters and mary but francis walsingham found them. throckmorton was executed.

[RIDOLFI PLOT] Explain the plot and the impact on Elizabeth:
Ridolfi, the pope's spy, wanted to kill Elizabeth, cause a spanish invasion & make mary the queen - she would then marry the duke of norfolk. Phillip II said he would prepare 10000 troops to invade england. William Cecil found out about the plot so the duke of norfolk was arrested and later executed.
Elizabeth realised she couldnt trust mary and she decided to improve relations with france as spain was a threat.
[NORTHERN EARLS PLOT] Explain the plot and the impact on Elizabeth:
The Catholic Earls of Northumberland and Westmoreland planned to get Mary out of imprisonment and on to the throne. They gathered an army of 6,000 soldiers.
Elizabeth heard of it and crushed the rebellion - wouldve shown people she was a powerful monarch. she put 800 rebels to death and the earls fled to scotland.

plan was for duke of guise to invade england, murder elizabeth and put mary on the throne. He had support from philip II and the pope. anthony babington passed letters to mary inside beer barrels. walsingham still found the plot out. babington was hanged, drawn and quartered for treason.
