Nervous System

    Cards (10)

    • The nervous system is a specialised network of cells in the human body and is our primary internal communication system
2 main functions: to collect, process and respond to information in the environment; to co-ordinate the working of different organs and cells in the body
    • The brain is the centre of the nervous system which controls all the organs and systems of the body
    • The spinal cord is a large collection of neurons communicating between the brain and the body; sends information inwards to the brain and outwards to the body
    • The central nervous system is made up of the brain and spinal cord
    • The peripheral nervous system is made up of the somatic and autonomic (sympathetic and parasympathetic branches) system
    • The nervous system is made up of the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system
    • The peripheral nervous system transmits information from the environment to the CNS, and from the CNS to other parts of the body
    • The somatic nervous system is responsible for movement and transmitting information between the central nervous system and senses; these functions are voluntary- conscious about information moving from your body to the central nervous system
    • The autonomic nervous system is responsible for transmitting information between the CNS and internal organs; it is involuntary- unconscious process of information in organs and CNS; functions are divided between the sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest and digest)
    • Stimulus (SAM) -> Amygdala -> Hypothalamus -> Pituitary gland -> Adrenal gland -> Adrenaline
