Chemical Changes

Cards (10)

  • What happens when a Metal reacts with Oxygen?

    A Metal Oxide is formed
  • Explain the Reactivity Series
    • Potassium, Sodium and Lithium react rapidly with water at room temperature
    • Calcium reacts quite rapidly with water at room temperature
    • Magnesium, Zinc, Iron and Copper have no reaction
  • A more reactive element will displace a less reactive element from its compound
  • What is electrolysis?
    • Solid ionic Compounds cannot conduct electricity
    • The ions are locked in place and are not free to move
    • When an ionic compound is melted or dissolved in water, the forces of attraction are broken and the ions are free to move
    • These liquids and solutions can now conduct electricity - These are called electrolytes
  • What is a Cathode?
    Negative electrode
  • What is an Anode?
    Positive electrode
  • Positive Ions move to the cathode to and gain electrons to form atoms
  • Negative Ions move to the anode and lose electrons to form atoms
  • Aqueous - Dissolves in Water
  • Hydrogen Is produced at the cathode if the metal is more reactive than hydrogen
