  • Process of terminal velocity on a falling object
    • Skydiver leaves plane and will accelerate until the air resistance equals the weight
    • He will then reach terminal velocity
    • He open the parachute, it increases air resistance so it is bigger than wieght
    • Slows diver down until his speed has dropped enough for it to equal his weight. This is the new terminal velocity
  • stopping distance is the total distance you need to stop after you see a problem
  • thinking distance is the distance the vehicles travels during the driver's reaction time
  • the braking distance is the distance the vehicle travels after the brakes are applied until it comes to a complete stop
  • stopping distance = thinking distance + braking distance
  • thinking distance = speed x reaction time
  • Newton's First Law
An object will remain at rest or continue to travel with constant velocity unless acted upon by a resultant force
  • Newton's Second Law
The rate of change of momentum of an object is directly proportional to the net force which acts on the object
  • Newton's third law
when two objects interact, they exert equal and opposite forces on each other.
The forces must be of the same type and same magnitude
  • Archimedes Principle
When a body is completely or partially submerged in a fluid, it experiences an upthrust equal to the weight of the fluid it has displaced
