SSRI’s

    Cards (6)

    • SSRI’s stand for Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor’s
    • Serotonin is released by certain neurons in the brain, and then released by presynaptic neurons and travel along the synapse
The Neurotransmitter chemically conveys the signal from the presynaptic neurone to the postsynaptic neurone
It is then reabsorbed by the presynaptic neurone, broken Down and reused
    • By preventing the reuptake and breakdown of serotonin, SSRI’s effectively increase levels of serotonin in the synapse and continue to stimulate the postsynaptic neurone
    • Takes 3-4 months of daily use to be effective
    • Side effects cause nausea and headaches
    • SSRI’s can be taken alongside CBT to treat OCD, through reducing a patients emotional symptoms allowing them to focus on the therapy
