structure of a cell

• nucleus - control center of the cell, tells the cell what to do
• chromatin - long strands of dna
• nucleolus - inside the nucleus, creates rRNA to make ribosome, sends mRNA to ribosome to make proteins
• rough endoplasmic reticulum - contains ribosomes, production of proteins, transport proteins using vesicles
• smooth endoplasmic reticulum - no ribosomes, produces lipid, cholesterol and hormones
• golgi body - receives vesicles and modifies proteins by adding lipids and carbs
• mitochondria - generates energy, cellular respiration, and has its own dna
• lysosome - digestive enzymes, destroy pathogens
• cytoplasm - dissolved solutes
• centrioles - division in animal cell
• cilia and flagella - movement of the cell
• vacuole - only in plant cell, stores water and nutrients
• chloroplast - where photosynthesis occurs
• chlorophyll - green pigment
• cell wall - made of cellulose and provides support and structure to the cell
• cell membrane - selective permeability, contains protein channels
