• JJ Thompson, a British scientist in the late 1980s


  discovered the electron and his model for the atom had the electrons scattered throughout the atom randomly and was someties called the "plum pudding model"
• Ernest Rutherford, a student of Thompson's from New Zealand


  discovered the proton in 1909 and the nucleus in 1911.

  the results of his gold foil experiment led Rutherford to the idea that gold must be mostly empty space, with their particles packed into a dense nucleus at the center.

  also worked with Rutherford and Thompson and in 1932, he proved that neutrons exist. there is still a lot that we don't know about atoms.
