  • came from the two Greek words: Philo which means love and Sophia which means wisdom. 
  • Etymologically speaking, Philosophy means “love of wisdom”. 
    — refers to science that studies beings in their ultimate
  • METAPHYSICS 
    —-study of things that cannot be experienced such as the concept of god and freedom.
  • EPISTEMOLOGY
    —–study of the nature and scope of knowledge and justified belief.
    —considered a major subfield of philosophy

     —study of the principles and criteria of a valid argument. 
    —uses reason to determine if a conclusion is true or untrue

  • HOLISTIC PERSPECTIVE
    — looks at all aspects of a given problem or situation.
    — view that considers large scale pattern in a system.

  • PARTIAL POINT OF VIEW
    —focuses on the specific aspects of the problem.
    —looks only at a limited number of aspects in a given problem.
    —conclusions are made based on considering some, but not all sides of the problem or situation.

    It enlarges our understanding of the world. It expands our intellectual horizons and freedom of thought.

    Philosophy can increase our sensitivity for universalistic moral values and stimulate our readiness to stand up for the principles of justice and fairness.
  • PSYCHOLOGICALLY AND PERSONALLY 
    philosophy can give one self-knowledge, foresight and a sense of direction in life.
  • When you are curious about something which may be unknown, you wonder why. As you start wondering, you start philosophizing. And Philosophizing means thinking and expressing oneself in a philosophical manner. It is a process of determining the truth.
  • Truth means being in accord with fact or reality or fidelity to an original. It is undisputed, constant, factual and absolute
       - The main concern is not so much on the truth but the way or process of distinguishing claims that are true from those that are false.
