EEGs

Cards (9)

  • EEG = electroencephalogram
  • Electrodes placed on the scalp to detect small electrical charges resulting from activity of brain cells
  • Can be used to detect brain disorders, eg epilepsy or brain slowing
  • Uses Alpha, beta, delta and theta waves
  • Strength - provides a recording of brain activity in real time
  • Strength - allowing for casual explanation to be made
  • A quick way of diagnosing abnormal brain activity, eg epileptic seizures
  • Weakness - only measures superficial/exterior area of the brain and is not able to measure deeper structural activities
  • Weakness - Nearby electrodes may get confused about where the precise location of activity is. Therefore it could identify activity in neighbouring locations rather than exact source
