• drug: any substance taken into body that modifies or affects chemical reactions in the body 
• antibiotics kill bacteria, do not affect viruses (viruses do not have bacterial features)
• some bacteria are resistant to antibiotics

  what reduces effectiveness of antibiotics:

  • overuse, resistant bacteria survive and reproduce. (ex: MRSA)
  • incomplete courses, do not kill all bacteria
• antibiotics: drugs used for the treatment of bacterial infections

  • killing bacteria (destroying cell walls, bacterial cells burst)
  • inhibiting growth and reproduction
