Glaciers

Cards (18)

  • Glaciers?

    slow moving mass of ice
  • Zone of accumulation?

    Snow is added
  • Zone of ablation?

    Where snow is melted
  • Abrasion?

Rocks sticking out of the glacier shaping the land below it
  • Plucking ?
rocks are pullled from the glacier when it moves
  • How is a U shaped valley formed?
As glaciers go through the valley they widen the floor and walls
This is caused by the weight of the glaciers (erosion)
  • A corrie?
A bowl shaped hollow in the land
  • Arete ?

a tall ridge seperating two side by side corries
  • Striations?

scartches in the earth left behide by melting glaciers
  • Moraine?

material left behide a moving glacier
  • Drumlin?

    e-longated hills of glacial deposits
  • Erractics?

large rocks dropped of by glaciers
  • Where are glaciers found?
High altitude and high latitude area
  • What is the percentage of earth covered in ice?
    10%
  • Population of Alaska?
    731,000
  • How many glaciers in alaska?
    27,000
  • 3 steps of corrie being formed?
Snow is gathered in small hallows forming a glacier
Then the glacier moves down by gravity causing plucking to happen
Erosion then continues then wides to create a bowl shaped hallow
Due to freeze thaw weathing the glacier then breaks apart causing it to melt leaving a tarn lake behind
  • How does a U-Shaped valley turn into a V-shaped ?

Before ice age: u shaped valley
During ice age : Valley is filled wtih ice and it widens the crack due to plucking and abrasion
After ice age:ice is then melted
