Level of organization

Cards (4)

  • Cells contain organelles:
    Here:
    1. Cells can be eukaryotic or prokaryotic: - eukaryotic cells are complex and include all animal and plant cells. -prokaryotic cells are smaller and simpler, e.g. bacteria
    2. Organelles are tiny structure within cells. You can only see them through a powerful microscope
  • Similar cells are Organized into Tissues:
    Here:
    1. A tissue is a group of similar cells that work together to carry out a particular function
    • E.g: plants have a xylem tissue (for transporting water and mineral salts) and a phloem tissue (for transporting sucrose and amino acids).
    2. A tissue contains more than 1 cell type
  • Tissue are organized into Organs
    Here:
    1. An organ is a group of tissues working together to perform a function
    E.g:
    • Lungs in mammals and leaves on plants are both organs - they're both made up of several different tissue types
  • Organs make up Organ Systems:
    Here:
    1. Organs work together to form organ systems. Each system has a different job.
    E.g:
    • In mammals, the digestive system is made up of organs including the stomach, intestines, pancreas and liver
