    1. 1900’s- campaigning for legal and political rights.
    2. 1960’s- Argue against male domination and for liberation.
  • Liberal feminists:
    • Believe socialisation is the main cause of subordination of women.
    • Men and women have equal potential.
    • Liberate women by changing attitudes.
  • Radical feminists:
    • Family leads to female oppression.
    • Men dominate world of work and power over women.
    • Want separatism- get away from men.
    • Heterosexual relationships- sleeping with the enemy.
  • Marxist feminism:
    • Gender inequality is rooted in the capitalist system.
    • Female oppression benefits capitalism.
  • Post-modernist feminists:
    • Women have choice in creating family and relationships.
    • Family diversity reflects choice.
    • Gender identities are not fixed but fluid.
  • Barnard: Believes that marriage makes women mentally and physically ill.
  • Barnard Evaluation:
    • Strengths- Highlight women suffer in relationships.
    • Limitations- Very negative, not all women get married.
  • Oakley: Argues only about 15% of husbands had a high level of participation in house care, 20% participated in childcare.
  • Oakley evaluation:
    • Strengths- Highlights inequality at home.
    • Limitations- The study may be outdated, women now have more control over who they marry.
  • Ansley: Women are ’Takers of shit’ who soak up frustration of their husbands because of the exploitation they suffer at work.
  • Ansley evaluation:
    • Strengths- Shows the dark side of the family.
    • Limitations- Deterministic, out-dated.
  • Dobash and Dobash: Believe domestic violence occur when the woman challenges the man.
  • Dobash and Dobash Evaluation:
    • Strength- Highlights dark side of the family, statistics support their claim.
    • Limitations- Not all men will feel challenged.
