  • Pathogen
A micro-organism with the potential to cause harm in the form of (infectious) disease.
  • Host
An animal or plant in which a pathogen lives.
  • Pandemic
A type of epidemic that spreads through very large or global populations.
  • Epidemic
A wide-spread infection that quickly escalates within a population.
  • Virus
The smallest pathogen, made up of genetic material and proteins. This pathogen works by invading and replicating inside host cells.
  • Bacteria
A prokaryote that invades a host and causes illness by releasing harmful toxins.
  • Fungi
A single-cellular or multi-cellular eukaryotic organism. Prefers damp environments and helps break down organisms.
  • Protist
A microscopic single-cellular eukaryote that can invade host cells using a vector.
  • Vector
A living thing that can transmit a disease.
  • Examples of viruses
Influenza, Common Cold, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Chicken Pox, TMV, Ebola and HIV.
  • Examples of bacteria
Food Poisoning, Whooping Cough, Typhoid, Salmonella, Gonorrhea, E. coli and Cholera.
  • Examples of protists
    Malaria and Sleeping Sickness.
  • Examples of fungi
Athlete's Foot, Ringworm, Thrush and Rose Black Spot.
  • Non-communicable disease
A disease that cannot be spread from person to person. Examples include cancer and diabetes.
  • Communicable disease
A disease that can be spread from person to person. Examples include the common cold and gonorrhea.
  • Risk factor
A factor that can increase the likelihood of getting a disease.
  • Airborne disease
When a pathogen is transmitted by the air. This can be in the form of droplets, when a person sneezes.
