Respiratory System

• Respiratory system is composed of:

  Two (2) lungs and a series of passages that connect the lungs to the outside atmosphere.
• Structures (Passageway from the exterior to the alveoli of the lung interior)

  1. nose
  2. mouth
  3. pharynx
  4. larynx
  5. trachea
  6. bronchial tree
• Three (3) primary functions of RS:

  1. To supply oxygen to the blood and eventually to the cells.
  2. To eliminate carbon dioxide from the blood.
  3. To assist in regulating the acid-base balance of the blood.
