Red Eye

• Refer if vision is distorted, photophobia or true eye pain, redness localised around pupil or irregular shape
• Red eye subconjunctival haemotoma, simple vasodialation or conjunctivitis
• Subconjunctival haematoma is broken blood vessels in sclera, it causes no pain or visual disturbance, sudden onset
• Haematoma has no treatment however refer if caused by trauma or patient is diabetic
• Simple vasodilation is general redness of the white, frequently due to irritation, allergy or sleep deprivation
• Local antihistamines, sodium cromoglycate or vasoconstrictor for short term use
