H. heterophyes

• H. heterophyes is also called Minute fluke
• Means of Infection - Ingestion of metacercaria in fish
• Infective Stage - Metacercaria
• Intermediate Hosts:

  • 1st IH: Snail (Pironella spp.)
  • 2nd IH: Brackish freshwater fish
• Final Host - Man
• Habitat - Duodenum and Jejunum
• • Has a third sucker: Genital sucker or Gonotyl
  • Ovary is globular or lobed

  H. heterophyes
• • Contains fully developed miracidia
  • May resemble the size and shape of Clonorchis and Opisthorchis
  • No abopercular thickening

  H. heterophyes
• Prominent manifestation of H. heterophyes is similar to that of a Peptic Ulcer Disease
• Diagnosis of H. heterophyes uses Kato thick method and PCR
• Praziquantel - drug of choice
