Cards (8)

  • Isolate the Variable
Get the variable (like x or y) by itself on one side of the equation, without any operations or numbers attached to it.
  • Use Inverse Operations
Use the opposite operation to get the variable isolated. For example, if there's an addition, do a subtraction, and if there's a multiplication, do a division.
  • Check Your Answer
Plug your solution back into the original equation to make sure it's true. This is an important step to ensure you got the correct answer.
  • 2x + 3 = 5
    Subtract 3 from both sides: 2x = 2. Then, divide both sides by 2: x = 1
  • A Linear Equation is...

an equation of the form ax + b = c, where a, b, and c are constants, and a is not equal to zero.
  • Example: 2x + 3 = ?
    5
  • A Quadratic Equation is...
an equation of the form ax^2 + bx + c = 0, where a, b, and c are constants, and a is not equal to zero.
  • Example: x^2 + 4x + 4 = ?
    0
