Star

Cards (5)

  • The star topology is currently used in networks today, and it’s the main topology used to connect edge devices (end users)
    • All network devices are wired back to a hub or switch.
    • The computers can be next to each other or spread out across an office space, but all communication goes back to a central location.
    • 1st benefit: This topology is widely adopted because it concentrates the failure and diagnostic points in a central location.
    • 2nd benefit: we can swap out the edge switches all from the same location
  • Disadvantage: if a switch fails, every device connected to the switch is affected.
  • Many buildings have multiple star topologies; as an example, the edge switch is wired back to a larger switch, sometimes called a core switch.
