Homeostasis

Cards (6)

  • Homeostasis - the regulation of internal conditions of a cell or organism to maintain optimum conditions, in response to internal and external changes
  • In the human body, homeostasis controls:
    • Blood glucose concentration
    • Blood temperature
    • Water levels
  • All control systems have:
    • Receptors
    • Coordination centres
    • Effectors
  • Receptors - cells that detect stimuli
  • Coordination centres - receive and process information from receptors (e.g. brain and spinal cord)
  • Effectors - bring responses to body to bring conditions back to optimum levels (e.g. muscles and glands)
