Biological Approach

Cards (3)

  • Assumption : Behaviour can be inherited and influenced by physical properties.
  • Behaviour has a genetic basis and your genotype (the genes you possess) can influence your behaviour. MZ twins have identical genotypes which means they are predisposed to have the same phenotype -- physical and behavioural characteristics that can be observed. Biological structures like areas of the brain and neurons can determine behaviour. Challenges faced by our ancestors in the environment of evolutionary adaptation can determine our behaviour. Some behaviours are innate and this is due to the adaption of our species as it would aid survival.
  • Evaluation
Scientific research support -- concordance rates in MZ twins compared to DZ twins -- assumptions are credible as they are based on credible and objective data.
RWA -- led to an increased understanding of biology which has led to successful treatments.
Criticised for having biological determinism -- limited approach as it does not consider the role of free will or nurture.
Can be seen as reductionist -- reduces complex behaviour into a minimal cause (genetics) -- too simplistic approach.
