• What is germination?

  The process when a seed starts to grow
• Which part of the seed is the young root and shoot that will develop into the adult plant?

• The three things seeds need for germination are:

  1. water
  2. warmth
  3. oxygen
• Why does germination require water?

  To soften the seed coat so the embryo can grow
• Why does germination require warmth?

  To speed up chemical reactions
• Why does germination require oxygen?

  Used for respiration which makes energy for the plant to grow
• Without water, warmth and oxygen, a plant will not germinate.
• A plant without water will NOT germinate because the seed coat will not be softened
• A plant without warmth will NOT germinate because chemical reactions can't take place.
• A plant without oxygen will NOT germinate because they can't make energy to grow
• A plant without light will have taller shoots to find sunlight
• A seed that has water, warmth, oxygen and light will have

  • green leaves
  • small shoots
• A seed that has no water will have:

  • brown seeds
  • no change
• A seed that has no oxygen will have:

  • a softened seed coat
  • no change
• A plant that has no warmth will have:

  • brown seeds
  • no change
• A plant that has no light will have:

  • light green leaves
  • taller roots
