  1. Lay two tapes at 90 degrees to create grid
  2. Use a random number generator to give co-ordinates (avoid bias)
  3. Place quadrat at co-ordinates
  4. Use ID key
  5. Count number of organisms of each species/ estimate percentage cover of quadrat
  6. Repeat for many quadrats (= representative sample)
  7. Calculate mean and multiply up for total area
