Aims + Hypotheses

    Cards (6)

    • Define an aim
Statement of what the researcher intends to find out and describes the purpose of the study (intension) ….”To investigate/examine”
    • Define a hypotheses
(experimental) – a clear/precise/testable statement that states the relationship between the variables to be investigated (IV + DV)
    • State what an independent and dependent variable are
IV = the variable directly manipulated by the researcher
DV = the variable being measured in a study
    • Explain the difference between directional, non-directional and null hypotheses.
Directional = states the kind of difference between the two conditions/groups of participants in the study (one-tailed)

Non-directional = just states that there is a difference but does not specify the difference between the two conditions/groups of participants (two-tailed)

Null = states that there is no difference between the two conditions/groups of participants
    • Define 1 tailed
When a hypothesis is fixed and goes in one direction. It is referred to as being directional.
Example = there will be a significant positive correlation between average CGSE scores and performance on a memory test.
    • Define 2 tailed
When a hypothesis can go in either direction
Example = There will be a significant correlation between average GCSE scores and performance on a memory test.
