  Occurs between two continental plates where their collisions results in little to no subduction; creates mountains

  Occurs between an oceanic plate and continental plate

  • oceanic plate subduct beneath the less dense continental plate; creates volcanic ranges

  Occurs between two oceanic plates; the older (and cooler) plate subducts beneath the younger one; forms an island arc
