SIGNIFICANT FIGURES

    Cards (6)

    • Significant Figures
After computations, these are the number of digits in the result that are known with some degree of reliability.
    • RULES OF SIGNFICANT FIGURES
      All nonzero digits are significant
    • RULES OF SIGNIFICANT FIGURES
Zeros between nonzero digits are significant
    • RULES OF SIGNIFICANT FIGURES
Zeros before nonzero digits at the start of the number are NOT significant.
    • RULES OF SIGNIFICANT FIGURES
Zeros after nonzero digits at the end of the number, when they are at the right of the decimal point, are significant.
example: in 21.5700, there are 6 significant figures
    • RULES OF SIGNIFICANT FIGURES
Zeros after nonzero digits at the end of the number, when they are at the left of a decimal point, MAY BE significant; to reduce the ambiguity if these numbers are significant, it is recommended to always use scientific notation for these large numbers.
