Collects excess fluid and matter from tissues and deposits them into the bloodstream
What is lymph?
A milky white substance that comes from tissue fluid
What is tissue fluid?
Fluid made from the bloods plasma that passes in and out of capillaries
What is the role of tissue fluid?
To transport nutrients, CO2 and dissolved oxygen
What forces the water from plasma out of cells?
Hydrostatic pressure (heart contractions)
What happens when tissue fluid doesn't get returned to our curculatory system?
Our body swells with accumulated fluid
What is the name of the condition that's caused by accumulated tissue fluid?
Odema, it can be fatal
How is tissue fluid returned to the capillaries?
Via osmosis
What is the definition of osmosis?
The movement of water through a semi-permiable membrane from a less concentrated solution to a more concentrated solution
What causes the water to move back into the capillaries?
Plasma is forced out by hydrostatic pressure, causing an imbalance so water is drawn back into the capillaries via osmosis due to the presence of albumin in the capillaries
What does tissue fluid take back into the capillaries?
Waste products and dissolved CO2
What are lymph nodes?
Small clusters of lymphatic tissue
What do lymph nodes store and develop?
Lymphocytes
What do lymphocytes do?
Screen the returning lymph for pathogens and destroy any that are found
When do lymph nodes swell?
When we are fighting infection
What happens to fatty acids in the lymphatic system?
They are absorbed and transported into the bloodstream so they can be absorbed by tissues and either stored or used for energy
When does excess fluid around capillaries become lymph?
