Unit 6.1 Reflection

• Reflection of light:

  • light travels in all directions and straight lines called rays
  • ray coming into a surface - incident ray
  • ray leaving the surface - reflected ray
  • incident ray makes and angle (i) with the surface i = angle of incidence
  • incident ray bounces off the surface and makes an angle (r) with the surface r = angle of reflection
  • normal line - a line perpendicular to the surface
• Diagram of reflection must include:

  • angle of incidence
  • angle of reflection
  • incident ray
  • reflected ray
  • normal
• Law of reflection:

  • the law of reflection states that the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection
  • i = r
  • reflection of light obeys the law of reflection
