ligaments

Cards (18)

  • Ligaments are tough, elastic bands of connective tissue that connect bones to other bones in your body. They are primarily made of collagen fibres.
    • They are tough bands of muscle connecting bones to bones
    • Ligaments are stretchy and strong string
  • They are made up of:
Collagen fibres, elastin fibres, ground substance, fibroblasts,
  • Collagen fibres: These are tiny threads woven together
  • Elastin fibres: These are like rubber bands, allowing them to stretch a little
  • Ground substance: A gel keeping them in place
  • Fibroblasts: These are special cells that repair and fix the ligaments
  • Ligaments have crucial roles in our body:
    Stability, movement, and injury prevention
  • Stability: Holding bones together, making them stable
  • Movement guidance: They guide the movement of joints
  • Injury prevention: They prevent excessive movement, preventing injuries
  • Ligaments have two types of injuries:
    Sprains and ruptures
  • Sprains: stretching or partial tearing of ligaments
  • Ruptures: Complete tears of ligaments
  • Ligament injuries can also be categorised into three main grades:
Grade one, grade two, and grade three
  • Grade l: Mild stretching
  • Grade ll: Partial tear
  • Grade lll: Complete tears
