Preferring objective, controlled, scientific methods for investigating behaviour
Involving conducting case studies on people with brain damage - comparing which parts of the brain are used to process information
Research may involve manipulating what effect it has on some aspects of behaviour
Laboratory experiment - better opportunities than field settings for careful manipulation and control of information
Example - Craik and Tulving:
Ps are given a series of words on a screen and were asked questions about their appearances, sound or meaning
Ps recognised more of the words with meaning than those processing its appearance
