Wave properties

• Displacement of wave: Vector from rest position of a point on a wave
• Amplitude of wave: Maximum displacement of a particle from its rest position
• Crest of wave: Highest points of a transverse wave
• Troughs of waves: Lowest point of transverse waves
• In phase:

  • Two points on a wave that always have the same direction of motion
  • Crests and troughs on a wave are always in phase
• Wavelength: Shortest distance between two successive crests or troughs
• Waveform: Shape of a wave
• Wavefront: Imaginary line joining all adjacent points that are in phase
• Compressions in longitudinal wave: Compressed area of air particles
• Rarefaction in longitudinal wave: Extended regions of air particles
• Loudness of sound: The higher the amplitude the louder the sound
• Pitch of sound: The higher the frequency, the higher the pitch of the sound
