Tolerance Limits: Blood glucose level

• Human tolerance limit is 70 - 110 mg/dL
• Glucose is the primary substrate of respiration, the concentration must be maintained within a narrow tolerance limit
• Glucose rises above tolerance limits = hyperglycaemia
• Glucose decreases below the tolerance limits = hypoglycaemia
• Diabetes is a disease associated with high levels of blood glucose, usually as a result of the lack of the hormone insulin
