Action potentials

Cards (4)

  • An action potential is like a wave of electrical energy that travels down a neuron
  • It starts when a neuron gets excited by a stimulus, causing sodium ions to rush in and make the inside of the cell positive (depolarization)
  • Then potassium ions rush out, making the inside negative again (repolarization)
  • This electrical wave moves along the neuron, carrying a signal from one end to the other
