    Cards (19)

    • Some disorders are the result of a change in the bases or coding of our genes and can be passed on from parent to child
    • Inherited disorders
Diseases that can be passed from parent to child
    • Some inherited disorders cause few problems such as inherited colour blindness
    • Some inherited disorders are fatal
    • Polydactyly
Condition where babies are born with extra fingers or toes
    • Polydactyly
      • Caused by a dominant allele
      • Most common form of inherited disorder
    • If you are homozygous, your children will definitely have the condition
    • Cystic fibrosis is a disorder that affects many organs of the body

    • There is currently no cure for cystic fibrosis
    • Scientists have no way of curing genetic disorders
    • Recessive phenotype
Condition that requires two recessive alleles to be expressed
    • Dominant phenotype

    • A couple can have a baby with sickle cell anemia caused by a recessive allele even if neither parent shows signs of the disorder
    • Genetic diagram
A visual representation of possible genotypes of parents
