Results

• More than half the juvenile thieves had been separated from their mother for longer than 6 months during their first 5 years
• In the control group only 2 were separated From their mother
• 14 of the young thieves (32%) showed affectionless psychopathy
• None of the control groups were affectionless psychopaths
• Bowlby found that 86% of the affectionless psychopaths (thieves) had experienced a long period of maternal deprivation before the age of 5 years
• Only 17% of the thieves not diagnosed as affectionless psychopaths had experienced maternal deprivation
• Only 2 of the control group had experienced a prolonged separation in the first 5 years
