  1. When in flight, insect muscles respire anaerobically
  2. Produce lactate
  3. Decreases water potential in cells
  4. Water moves into cells from tracheoles via osmosis
  5. Decreases volume in tracheoles
  6. Therefore more air is drawn in from the atmosphere
