Case studies are
in-depth
investigations of a person,
group
, event, or
community
It uses information from a range of
sources
, such as from the person concerned and also from their
family
and friends.
Many techniques may be used such as
interviews
, psychological
tests
, observations and
experiments.
Case studies are generally
longitudinal
- simply meaning they follow the subject of an
extended
period of time
Sigmund
Freud
Conducted very detailed investigations into the
private
lives of his patients in an attempt to both
understand
and
help
them overcome their illnesses
Case studies provide rich
qualitative
data and have high levels of
ecological
validity.
However, it is difficult to
generalize
from individual cases as each one has
unique
characteristics
