MSMM

Cards (3)

  • MSMM-
    • Atkinson and Shiffrin- 1968-71
    • Sensory register: takes the input from each sense, its modality specifically coded (stores depend on the sense), with a high capacity, and has the duration of 0.5 seconds.
    • STM: acoustically coded (Baddeley), with a capacity of 7+/-2 (Jacob’s) and a duration of 18-30 seconds (Peterson and Peterson).
    • LTM: semantically coded (Baddeley), with a potentially unlimited capacity and also potentially having the duration of a lifetime (Bahrick).
  • MSMM-
CPS- Shows the separation between short and long TM (Baddeley), like that a mix up of similar sounding words from the STM, and words that have similar meaning are mixed up when using our LTM.
CPW- MSM may not be valid due to the experiments using digits/words which are constant syllables with no meaning.
  • MSMM-
    W- Lacks mundane realism.
W- Too simplistic as it only shows part of memory.
W- Shallice and Warrington (1970) studied KF who had amnesia, STM digits were poor, recall was better aloud – suggesting there’s anther STM for sounds.
W- Prolonged rehearsal isn’t needed to transfer into the LTMCraik and Watkins (1973) found the type of rehearsal to be more important, like elaborate rehearsal when you link the new knowledge to some old knowledge.
