      • In 1017 Emma was summoned to marry Canute , the new Danish King of England
      • Born in Denmark, Canute was grandson of Harold Bluetooth who established Christianity as the religion on the Danes
      • In 1018 Canute also became King of Denmark and united the English and the Danes
      • In 1018 he also took English Danegeld to pay off his soldiers and send them back to Denmark
      • By 1027 he appeared to be one of the most prestigious Monarks in Europe at the time
      • Canute also became King of Norway in 1028 and became the prosperous leader of the North Sea Empire
      • Canute died in 1035
      • Emma died in 1052 and buried in Winchester with Canute
      • Canute ruled England for 19 years and his reign was generally a time of peace and prosperity
      • Canute was careful to treat the Church leader in England well to maintain a good relationship with the Pope
    • Significance- In the future Canute was given the title ' the Great'
