  • Deviation from Social Norms:
    Pros:
    • Holistic - accounts for all aspects of behaviour
    • More accurate
    Cons:
    • Subjective - harder to generalise, lacking ecological validity
    • Cultural relativism - relies on stereotypical norms leading to discrimination
  • Deviation from ideal mental health:
    Pros:
    • Mental health is comprehensive covering a broad criteria and allowing people to seek help
    Cons:
    • Cultural relativism - the concept of self-actualisation may be seen as selfish in collectivist cultures and thus, deemed abnormal
    • Each element of Jahoda's mental health is difficult to measure as they can vary between individuals - it is harder to generalise
  • Failure to Function Adequately:
    Pros:
    • Objective measure - helps scale the severity of depression and therefore more accurate
    Cons:
    • exaggerate the severity of the disorder
    • Culturally relative - everyday life can vary from culture to culture
  • Statistical Infrequency:
    Pros:
    • Generalisability - same measure for everyone
    Cons:
    • Automatically labels abnormal characteristics as a negative even if it isn't eg. high IQ
