Biofuels

Cards (6)

  • Give 3 advantages of biofuels
    1. Renewable
    2. easy to transport
    3. can be used in the vehicles we have today e.g. cars that use petrol
  • What is a biofuel?
Fuels made from plant material or animal waste
  • Give 2 disadvantages of biofuels
    1. Require a large area of land to grow
    2. require a lot of energy to harvest, process and transport
  • Why are biofuels carbon neutral?
They absorb the same amount of Co2 while geowing as they release when they’re burned - there is no net release of Co2
  • How is biofuel different to a fossil fuel like petrol?
Biofuels - made from living/recently living organisms like plants and algae or animal waste
Fossil fuels - made from organisms which died millions of years ago
  • Why are biofuels not really carbon neutral in practice?
Growing biofuels = clearing land by cutting trees
trees can no longer photosynthesise and absorb CO2 themselves + release large amounts of Co2 if burned
usually requires alot of energy to harvest, process and transport the biofuels which will itself produce alot of Co2
