SENSORY RECEPTORS

Cards (18)

  • What are the layers of the eyeball?
    • Sclera: tough outer coat; white of the eye
    • Choroid: pigmented vascular layer
    • Retina: innermost layer
  • What is the function of the sclera?

It is the tough outer coat of the eye
  • What is the function of the choroid?
    It prevents scattering of light
  • What are rods and cones in the retina responsible for?
Rods are for night vision, and cones are for day vision and color vision
  • What is the conjunctiva?
A mucous membrane covering the front surface of the sclera and lining the eyelids
  • What is conjunctivitis?

Inflammation of the conjunctiva caused by allergic reactions
  • What is the function of the lens in the eye?
It focuses/refracts light rays on the retina
  • What are some common disorders of the eyes?
    • Astigmatism: unequal focusing of light rays
    • Blindness: partial loss or lack of vision
    • Cataract: cloudiness of the lens
    • Color blindness: inability to perceive certain colors
    • Farsightedness (hyperopia): blurred vision due to incorrect focusing behind the retina
    • Nearsightedness (myopia): blurred vision due to incorrect focusing in front of the retina
    • Glaucoma: high intraocular pressure
    • Retinoblastoma: cancer of immature retinal cells
    • Strabismus: eyes not directed toward the same object simultaneously
  • What is astigmatism?
Unequal focusing of light rays on the retina, causing part of the image to be blurry
  • What is blindness?

Partial loss or lack of vision
  • What is a cataract?

Cloudiness/opacity of the lens which impairs or prevents vision
  • What is color blindness?

Inability to perceive certain colors or, more rarely, all colors
  • What is farsightedness (hyperopia)?
Blurred vision caused by light rays being incorrectly focused behind the retina
  • What is nearsightedness (myopia)?
Blurred vision caused by light rays being incorrectly focused in front of the retina
  • What is glaucoma?

A condition in which aqueous humor is produced more rapidly than it is removed, resulting in high intraocular pressure
  • What is retinoblastoma?
A cancer of immature retinal cells
  • What is strabismus?

A disorder of the extrinsic eye muscles in which the eyes are not directed toward the same object simultaneously
