STM

• If attention is paid to a stimulus, it will enter STM.
• Information is coded acoustically dissimilar, and there is a capacity of around 7 chunks of information (+/- 2)
• STM has a short duration (around 18 seconds) but can be extended by rehearsal
• The duration is around 18-30 seconds unless the information is rehearsed
• Maintenance rehearsal can be used to keep information in STM (saying something over and over again
• If we rehearse information long enough then it passes into our LTM
