5.1 - Homeostasis

Cards (6)

  • Homeostasis
the regulation of conditions inside the body to maintain a stable internal environment, in response to both internal and external conditions
  • Automatic Control Systems
    • Receptors - detects change
    • Coordination Centres - interpret the change and decide what needs to be done (brain, spinal cord)
    • Effectors - carry out the change (muscles, glands)
  • To send signals between the steps of Automatic Control Systems, the Nervous System or Endocrine System is used.
  • Endocrine System:
    • sends messages through bloodstream using hormones
    • sends to the entire body
    • slower
    • long lasting effects
  • Negative Feedback Loops
A change in environment gets detected and negative feedback uses the Automatic Control Systems to regulate that change.
  • Why does to body need to maintain optimal conditions?
For optimal enzyme action and cell function
