Social learning theory

    Cards (8)

    • Social learning theory (SLT)?

States that things take place with the organism that mediate between stimulus + response
->The person's internal + mental process will affect their behaviour
    • what is the main assumptions?

-People learn through observation + imitation of others within a social context
-Suggests that learning occurs directly through classical + operant conditioning, but also indirectly through vicarious learning
-It combines both behaviourist + cognitive elements to explain learning
-It mainly uses observation and lab experiments
    • What are the key aspects of affective role models?

Age, gender, ethnicity, successfulness, some you look up to, social-economic background and someone who increases your confidence
    • What is the mediational processes?

Individuals do not automatically observe the behaviour of a role model and imitate it. There is some thoughts prior to imitation which is called the mediational processes
    • What are the 4 stages of the mediational processes?
      1. Attention - The behaviour has to grab our attention
      2. Retention - We have to remember the behaviour
      3. Reproduction - We attempt to imitate the behaviour but may be limited by physical ability, confidence or simply opportunity
      4. Motivation - The reward + punishment that follow the behaviour will be motivation to either repeat the behaviour or not
    • What is self-efficacy?

-A person's belief that they can be successful when carrying out a particular task -> the degree of one's feeling's about one's ability to accomplish goals
-Can come in several forms (cognitive, motivational, affective and section processes
    • What is vicarious reinforcement?

The process of learning by observing others being rewarded or punished for their behavior, motivating us to reproduce the behaviour or not
-Bandura suggested that aggression can be learned directly via operant conditioning but indirectly through vicarious reinforcement
    • Bandura's Bobo doll study?

-Aim: to see whether behaviour could be learnt through observation
-Procedure: split ppts into 2 groups (G1 - exposed to adults acting aggressively (verbally + physically) towards the doll, G2 - exposed to non-aggressive adults)
-Results: those exposed to the aggressive adults reproduced verbally + physically aggressive behaviour and those exposed to non-aggressive adults showed virtually no aggression
