    In stave four the ghost takes Scrooge to an area of London that is described as “foul” and “wretched“ and that it ”reeked with crime and misery”.

    Tiny Tim is presented as an innocent victim of poverty whereas Ignorance and Want are also innocent and helpless but they are also made out to be “grotesque” which shows how much they suffer due to society’s uncaring nature towards them.

    The Cratchits are poor but are shown to be ambitious and hardworking with Bob working for Scrooge and both Martha and Peter working as well.

    Scrooge says in the beginning how ”useful“ prisons and workhouses are but later on is ashamed of his views and his previous statement.

    When Scrooge first meets the Ghost of Christmas Present, he is sat on a throne of food which is “heaped up on the floor” which emphasises the fact that Dickens believes there is enough food for everyone and also mocks Thomas Malthus’s theory which Scrooge had voiced earlier on in the novella.
