Stopping Distances

Cards (7)

  • Stopping Distance: The minimum distance required for a vehicle to avoid collision with another object in an emergency
  • Stopping Distance = Thinking Distance + Braking Distance
  • Thinking Distance - The distance of the persons reaction time. It is the distance form when the person sees a hazard and eventually pushes down the brakes
  • Braking Distance - The distance from when the person pushes the braking force and the car actually stopping
  • What effects the reaction time in Thinking Distance?

    distractions
    being drunk or on drugs
    tired
All of these increase the reaction time, which means the reaction is slow towards the hazard which is bad
  • What effects the braking distance?
Speed - the more kinetic energy, the harder it is to slow down the car
Mass - the heavier the vehicle the harder it is to stop
    Condition of The brakes
  • If the road is icy or wet, this mean there is less friction and the vehicle is more likely to skid
