custodial sentencing involves the offender being incarcerated in a prison or a young offender's insitution
deterrence
prison is supposed to give a message to offender and to the rest of society that crime won't be tolerated.
incapacitation
the prisoner is taken out of society to protect the public and to stop the offender committing further offences
retribution
by sending the offenders to prison and taking away their freedom, you are making them pay for their actions. the punishment the offender receives should be proportionate to the seriousness of their crime.
rehabilitation
whilst in prison the offender should be 'reformed', so that upon release, offenders should be better adjusted and ready to take their place back in society
