Mutation

Cards (8)

  • What is a mutation?

A change in the DNA base sequence of a gene
  • What is a deletion mutation?

This is when a base in the sequence is left out
  • What is a frameshift mutation?
This is a result of a deletion mutation, it changes how every triplet is grouped after point of mutation.
  • What is a substitution mutation?

This is when one base is replaced by another
  • What are the three possible outcomes of a substitution mutation?
    1. Silent mutation-no effect on protein sequence because triplet codes for the same amino acid.
    2. Missense mutation-A different amino acid is coded for by the triplet.
    3. Nonsense mutation-the substitution triplet codes for a stop codon.
  • What can cause mutation?
Mutations occur spontaneously, but mutagenic agents increase the probability of a mutation occurring.
    e.g.-UV, radiation, chemicals
  • How does a mutation lead to the production of a non-functional enzyme?
This causes a change in the base sequence, which causes a change in the order of amino acids(primary sequence of protein). This means a change in the hydrogen, Iodine and disulphide bonds, resulting in a different tertiary structure. As a result there is a different active site, which is not complementary to the substrate, so an enzyme-substrate complex cannot form.
  • Why don't all mutations cause a change in the structure of a polypeptide?
    • The triplet codes for the same amino acids, so the protein has the same primary structure
    • Mutation occurs in introns, which are non-coding for polypeptides.
