Turgor pressure occurs when no more water can enter a cell due to the pressure inside:
Water moves into plant cells by osmosis
The vacuole swells
The cytoplasm is pressed against cell wall
The cell becomes rigid
The leaves & stem become rigid
As long as the outside solution is hypotonic, water moves in & keeps the cells rigid - supports the plant
Plant cells in a hypertonic solution lose water & become flaccid - plant wilts
When plant cells are placed in a hypertonic solution in a lab, lots of water leaves the cell --> vacuole & cytoplasm shrinks --> membrane pulls away from cell wall
